Brushstroke of Genius: How Targeted Campaigns Revitalized Sales for Herzog's
Client Overview
Herzog’s Home & Paint Centers is a family-owned business specializing in paint, home goods, and building supplies. Their marquee store in Kingston, NY, is a full-service hardware store and home center, offering a kitchen and bath design center, interior decorating, building materials, tools and hardware, lawn and garden, and a gift shop, in addition to their comprehensive paint department. Their other stores in Poughkeepsie, Fishkill, Albany, and Latham are dedicated Benjamin Moore paint stores, serving a diverse clientele of both residential consumers and professional contractors.
Challenge
Herzog’s Albany and Latham locations experienced a notable decline in sales, particularly for their high-quality Benjamin Moore paint products. The core challenge was to develop a marketing strategy that could effectively re-engage the local community and professional market to reverse the downward trend and drive foot traffic to these specific stores. The solution needed to be targeted and compelling for two distinct audiences: the DIY homeowner and the professional contractor.
The Solution
We developed a multi-channel campaign with separate, tailored messaging for each target audience. The approach utilized a mix of digital and print media to ensure maximum reach and impact within the local market.
Consumer Campaign:
This part of the campaign focused on attracting homeowners with offers on premium products. We created digital ads for Google, Facebook, and Instagram to reach local consumers and designed a direct-mail postcard. The messaging offered 20% off popular Benjamin Moore interior paints and exterior stains, along with an incentive of a $25 gift card for opening a free house account.
Contractor Campaign:
Recognizing that contractors have different needs, we crafted a separate campaign to appeal to their business-focused goals. This included digital ads on Google, Facebook, and Instagram, as well as a direct-mail postcard. The messaging was direct and value-oriented, promoting guaranteed lowest prices for those who opened a contractor account and a free Benjamin Moore t-shirt as a thank-you incentive.
Digital Ads
The ads address the specific needs and motivations of each audience, ensuring the messaging is highly relevant and compelling. By tailoring the offers to what consumers and contractors value most, the strategy maximizes the potential for engagement and conversion.

Campaign Strategy
Our strategy was to address the sales decline by executing a highly localized and targeted campaign. The core of our approach was to segment the audience into two distinct groups—consumers and contractors—and develop separate, yet coordinated, campaigns for each. By combining digital advertising (on Google, Facebook, and Instagram) with traditional direct-mail postcards, we aimed to create a cohesive multi-channel experience that delivered specific, value-driven offers directly to each audience in the Albany and Latham markets.

Conclusion
By creating highly segmented campaigns for both consumers and contractors, we were able to address the unique challenges of each audience with relevant offers and messaging. This targeted strategy aimed to not only revitalize sales for the Albany and Latham locations but also to reinforce Herzog’s position as the go-to source for both professional-grade and residential paint and supplies in the community.
